Posts: 449 ( 5 December, 2008 21:09) Prefect Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	(In the off-chance than anyone actually comes on here and posts!) It's been a long time, and I thought it'd be cool to catch up. We've all grown up a fair bit (outwardly, at least), and I was just wondering what everyone does nowadays. I'm living and working in France right now, as an English teaching assistant. It's alright - I'm living with another girl from my university, which is cool. I only have 12 hours of work a week (less at the moment, as the students are on strike - how stereotypical), and I get paid! Paid I tell you! Like real money, which I have earned! The town I'm in is nice but quiet, and it rains ALL the time. Way worse than the British weather! I'm missing my uni friends and my boyfriend (we've been together for nearly 2 and a half years now), and I'm looking forward to going home for Christmas. I'm working here 'til the end of April, and then I get a loooong summer holiday, and start back for my final year of uni in October. After that, I might end up doing a Masters, but I'm not too sure yet. How about everyone else?

After next Wednesday, which is the day of my last four exams, I'm planning on possibly invading my boyfriend's room (1 year, 2 months!) to play Rock Band 2 or take a very, very long nap and relaxing all day. (So I can spend the next day packing and cleaning, and then driving both of us home the day after that.) When I'm home, I get to work in retail! Wahoo! But, that will only happen if I can get in touch with my boss. I'm now running the crisis hotline at my school, which we expanded to take calls nationwide, rather than just locally. Oh, and I'll be on National Public Radio soon too, so hopefully that will generate more callers. I've been interviewing people like crazy in order to find people adequate enough to be trained to answer the phones. (It actually went well today, which is great!) Otherwise... I most have been doing homework, studying, worrying about what to do for/about graduate school, spending time with my boyfriend, and doing random things to entertain myself in my downtime. I also feel quite traitorous to TBWL as I have a whole new site going on and have just launched a Jane Austen Book Club, Jane Austen January, on it (it starts Jan 1st). I cannot believe I have been doing online communities, from the original Claire's Cabin, then TBWL and now PD&P for TEN YEARS!!! Hope you're enjoying France, Keziah. Good luck with exams, CG! I really spend half my time in shock at how quickly the time has passed; it's really amazing to see how far we've all come from the old TBWL days! Claire - it's amazing to hear that you're writing! And really... that comment about Padfoot made me think, I wonder where he's disappeared to!

I'm almost done with my third year of college, looking on to vet school! I'm starting work on my Honors Thesis paper on the collective behavior of ant colonies regarding midden piles, specifically how it relates to self-imposed rules that allow social insects to act as a whole, superorganism when there's not actually any communication regarding social roles. Basically....how do ants dispose of their trash? I'm going to be working down in Washington DC this summer (for the government! Gasp!) and trying to figure out how on earth Grad School works (I must get a manual). And laughing a the sixth movie, I presume. CG, a crisis hotline? That is very cool! Did you ever get on NPR? I'd love to hear you!

But I missed when it aired, so I never heard how it sounded when it was edited. :-( I'm curious if the lady who conducted the interview keeps copies of it (and distribute it myself, if I don't sound silly!). So far, I am running unopposed to keep my position as a director of our hotline too. Yay. I'm looking in to possibly joining a victim services organization and becoming an advocate for sexual assault victims, but I haven't decided for sure... And I'll be shadowing a school psychologist or social worker next semester, ideally. Tutoring and mentoring children in alternative high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools is also a possibility. ('Cause free time is so over-rated!) Honors thesis? Wow, that's great. My professors pushed for it, and I did everything there was to do to meet the criteria for the highest University honors, except prepare & write the honors thesis. The thesis proposal was enough to pull my hair out! I avoid one of my professors because I know he is very disappointed in me for not doing one. :-( It's great to hear when other people do them! What inspired you to study ants? What will you be doing in Washington? (Is it an internship?) The whole process for applying to grad school sounds very traumatic and exhausting... And the GRE, ughh. I need to take it this summer, or early fall. If you find a manual for grad school, let me know! Any little bit helps. I've been contemplating getting a masters or PhD in School Psychology, but counseling and social work and experimental or social psychology completely fascinate me too. Posts: 324 (23 March, 2009 04:34) Prefect Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I'm a first year in college, pre-med and majoring in Psychology and maybe Slavic Studies (kind of a variety there, I know). I'm currently working in an Alzheimer's lab and having a ton of fun cloning and cultivating and picking colonies. Since it's my first year, nothing's too intense going on in terms of work...though academics at my school have certainly found a way to kick my butt. I'm going to school at University of Chicago, in Hyde Park (indeed, a few blocks away from President Obama's house ) and I absolutely love it. @GG: CHICAGO!!! AHHH! You're so close! And indeed, it seems like only a few months ago I read you had your son. Amazing! I ended a relationship of almost a year and a half in January and have since found a new boyfriend (who, I must say, is a lot better than the last). Through a lot of crossed wires and some backstabbing, all of my housing plans for the summer and next year managed to fall through. As a result, my boyfriend and I are for sure going to live together, possibly (hopefully) with a few of his friends. I practically live in his room already at the moment, so I don't foresee any huge problems but...I'm sure if Padfoot were around he'd have something to say about the matter of two young 'uns who haven't known each other that long signing a lease. I'm on spring break right now, so I've been staring at a lot of walls and television sets, and in general am trying not to worry about my finals results too much. There'll be plenty of time for that once I go back to school. @CG: NPR is so cool! That's wonderful! All of your work sounds excellent and fascinating. I was looking into psychology myself, but my school is lacking in clinical, so that makes it a bit tricky to merge with the pre-med. But I'm hoping to squeeze in some classes in my busy schedule somewhere. Ha, it's amazing how far we've all come. I think made my parents go gray from worrying about cyber stalkers and internet creep and the like. But I'd like to think you lot all made me turn out for the much better The trick to flying is falling and missing the ground.

That's a good school. :-) My friend just got accepted to graduate school there. Have you seen the Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry yet? I've been dying to see it when I come home for the summer. That's cute about living with your boyfriend... I hope that it works out, and that even if you two split, your living situation still stays comfortable and healthy. It's rough breaking leases. Are you planning on studying psychiatry, since you're pre-med w/ psychology? Or what medical field are you interested in so far? Sounds like everyone has been growing up well. Back from the States, I gave up on research because there is not much opening for that in France. I know: my wife is still in the party and even if she writes 3 articles every 2 years, with two third of them as first author, she is struggeling to find a stable position. Son and daughter are happy (9 and 4 years old). We live clother to our family, now (that is why we came back actually). Thus, the kids are with their cousins every weekends. They're in an international school so they will not loose their english that easily (sadely, they are loosing it though). And now we have a dog. A cute female cavalier king charles. I really miss all the time spending on arguing with Paddy, but I don't have much time, now. sight I am surprised that this web site remembers my name and signature... Give me the money that has been spent in war and I will clothe every man, woman, and child in an attire of which kings and queens will be proud. I'm getting ready to start my second year of college. I'm studying Biology [and possibly minoring in French] and hoping to find an internship or something next summer and then eventually go to graduate school. I am unemployed, but just finished working as a secretary-like person in the Engineering building at my school. [I really wanted to work at the bookstore, but they weren't hiring.] I mostly spend my days sleeping, reading, daydreaming, and doing nothing productive. I still dearly love coffee and Weasleys, though. They're armed with five-five-sixers and pineapples.
