Does it need to have an effect on the story or gay rights? No. Nor does it mean that she did it to boost sales. If anything, I'm sure some people would
feel like there's more reason to hate Harry Potter because the books now contain magic AND homosexuality. (Gasp!)

Because people were constantly asking for more information about the characters and more backstory. And people had suspicions about DD & Grindewald.
There's no other reason for her to share info that she has about the characters that people don't NEED to know to understand the plot.
