I've read this book almost 10 times yet I still don't understand... What exactly happened to Harry (and where was he, really?) after Voldemort tagged him with A.K. ? What/Who was that creature that was "whimpering and moaning" under the seats? Also, why is it that if Lily and Petunia's parents were both Muggles, why did only Lily turn out to be a witch? Is/Was Petunia a Squib? Or Lily's parents have magical blood somewhere down the line...

Since Harry was a Horcrux, he had to be destroyed (= he had to die) in order to be able to completely conquer the Dark Lord. So he gave up his life, Voldemort AK'ed him, and he died. 'King's Cross' is a sort of afterlife. Actually, it's more like a pre-afterlife (limbo?), in that he still has a choice on whether he wants to live on or 'die completely'. If you go with the usual explanations of dying, he'd be in that tunnel of light, and he'd decide to not go to the light, but go back. It takes the shape of King's Cross, because... well, I guess because Harry associates it with important journeys to another world, and the journey from life to death is pretty much THE most important journey one can make! For someone else it might take another shape altogether (like a light-filled tunnel). The whimpering creature, which was both so sad and so disgusting, was the part of Voldemort's soul that had been in Harry, Harry being a Horcrux and all. It died along with Harry (which was the entire point of Harry dying) and it was left behind when Harry came back to life. I guess it took the shape of a crying little baby because... that's what Voldemort is deep down inside? I dunno. How come Hermione has magical abilities and her parents don't? It kind of works the same way. They may have had magical blood somewhere down the line, but it was probably so far back that they had no idea of it. Earlier in the book, Hermione told Harry and Ron that someone who creates horcruxes can repair the damaged by feeling true remorse. Voldie had created six horcruxes on purpose, and one by accident (Harry). During the final battle, Harry told Voldie that he should try to feel some remorse for his actions, because he knew Voldie's fate because of the "crying thing." Once Harry defeated Voldie, Voldie's future fate on the other side being eight of those things on the other side. That would just have been stupid. Otherwise most people would choose to come back obviously. The only reason that he had that choice is because what Voldy killed when he 'killed' Harry was the Horcrux within him. It protected Harry from death just as when Harry destroyed Voldy's Horcruxs Voldy didn't die as the Horcrux was separate from Voldy and another part of his soul. You can't kill two souls with one A.K. It's like killing two people with one bullet I think. It'd be pretty hard to do. In a way it acted as a kind of shield but because it was inside Harry as part of Harry it killed the host along with it but Harry could choose whether to return or not as it was the Horcrux that had been irreversibly killed and destroyed forever but not necessarily Harry. Harry as the host of the Horcrux was technically dead at that moment also but his 'soul' wasn't irreversibly confined to the afterlife,only Voldy's bit,and so he had a choice and could choose to go into the next world if he had wanted but obviously he did not make that choice as we all knew he wouldn't. He stayed and fought to protect the people he loves. That's what made this particular 'he's dead but comes back to life' plot actually WORK for a change. Probably the only one ever that actually made any form of proper sense,and for that Miss Rowling I salute you.
